Turner has more than 1,000 LEED Accreditied Professionals on staff nationally and 59 in Texas; Record volume of green buildings

Turner has more than 1,000 LEED Accreditied Professionals on staff nationally and 59 in Texas; Record volume of green buildings

DALLAS, July 30, 2009 – Turner Construction Company has achieved a significant milestone as a result of the company’s commitment to Green Building practices. Turner now counts 1,186 LEED Accredited Professionals (APs) on staff, more than 20% of its total staff. Building Design and Construction recently recognized Turner as having more LEED APs than any other firm in the U.S. architectural, engineering and construction industry, and, with the company’s $3 billion of “green” construction volume in 2008, Turner was additionally recognized as the leading green builder in the publication’s 2009 “Giants 300″ rankings. In Texas alone, Turner employs more than 59 LEED APs, 19 Green Advantage professionals, and has provided construction services for more than 25 green projects.

“We are proud to take the top spot in this year’s Building Design + Construction green rankings,” said Sam Latona, LEED-AP, preconstruction manager for Turner-Texas. “But in addition to having green professionals and building green buildings, we are committed to incorporating green practices throughout our three Texas offices. Company-wide green initiatives include the ‘LEEDing by Example’ employee incentive, which encourages our employees to become LEED-accredited. For those that become LEED-APs, they are entered into a lottery to receive the use of a new Toyota Prius hybrid for three years. We have also made a commitment to reduce our carbon emissions by five percent over the next five years, by reducing electricity consumption in all offices and reducing fuel consumption in company-owned and leased vehicles. Other initiatives include utilizing Turner’s online Construction Waste Recycling Reporting system, utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM), renovating offices to meet LEED standards, purchasing green office supplies, and providing green training for employees. Green practices such as these support Turner’s efforts to improve the planet and also advance sustainable building practices and environmental awareness throughout our organization, the construction industry and in our personal lives.”

Nationwide in 2004, Turner had only 42 LEED APs on staff when the company made a formal commitment to promoting green building practices. These commitments included a mandatory construction waste recycling program on all projects, conducting industry surveys and developing web-based and instructor-led green building training programs. Turner’s commitment to employee development has resulted in more than 2,500 employees receiving training in green building practices.

Turner’s LEED APs have enabled the company to complete 85 projects that have been LEED Certified by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC). An additional 131 Turner projects are LEED Registered. In addition, the firm’s sustainable construction work has grown to 40% of its backlog. Turner’s green building projects are in wide array of building types, including in the education, commercial, healthcare and aviation segments.

Recent Texas-based “green” projects constructed by Turner include the headquarters for architecture firm Corgan Associates Inc. (certified LEED Silver); a bank branch for JP Morgan Chase (certified LEED Silver); Pat Lobb Toyota (certified LEED Silver, first green auto dealership in the U.S.); the Embrey Engineering Building at Southern Methodist University (certified LEED Gold; first green academic building in Texas); the Haworth Showroom in downtown Dallas (certified LEED Gold); Wal-Mart’s green prototype store in McKinney, Texas (the first green Wal-Mart in the U.S.), and more.

“Every LEED AP contributes immeasurably to his or her employer’s success by bringing the latest in green building knowledge and a holistic perspective to the table. Having a LEED AP workforce more than 1,000-strong demonstrates Turner’s leadership and commitment to cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings for their customers,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO and Founding Chair, USGBC and Chair, GBCI.

DALLAS, May 27, 2009 -Turner Construction Company’s Dallas office has won a national Excellence in Construction Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for its construction of Comerica Bank’s new corporate headquarters in downtown Dallas. Representatives from Turner and Comerica Bank will be honored with the award in June at ABC’s Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

Turner Construction was hired to manage the Comerica Bank project shortly after the company announced it was relocating its corporate headquarters from Detroit to Dallas. The fast-track project involved the interior renovation of nearly 200,000 square feet in the distinctive glass-and-granite 60-story Comerica Tower located at 1717 Main Street in downtown Dallas, previously known as the Bank One Building. The multi-phase renovation included a massive atrium-covered banking and stock exchange hall (open from the lobby to the 5th floor), five floor levels, and the addition of wood-paneled conference rooms, a dining hall, break rooms, restrooms, resource centers and numerous executive offices. Additional renovation work performed by Turner consisted of remodeling the existing teller lines, replacing all existing countertops with granite, and updating the existing pneumatic-controlled HVAC system.

Prior to winning the national award, Turner won three local ABC awards for its construction of Comerica Bank’s new corporate headquarters in Dallas, its construction of Sagem Avionics, Inc.’s new United States headquarters facility, located in Grand Prairie, Texas, and for its renovation of Dallas’ legendary Mansion Restaurant at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek.

The ABC Excellence in Construction Awards is the premier competition within the construction industry that recognizes outstanding construction projects across the United States. The winning teams and projects represent the “best of the best” for safety, quality, teamwork, planning and innovation. A panel of industry experts serve as the competition’s judges each year, with this year’s panel including representatives from the National Association of Women in Construction, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the American Institute of Architects and the National Institute of Building Sciences.

DALLAS, May 1, 2009 – Turner Construction Company’s Dallas office has completed construction of a $35 million expansion project at Great Wolf Lodge, a northwoods-themed indoor waterpark resort in Grapevine, Texas, located between Dallas and Fort Worth. The addition of the new facility comes about one year after the much-anticipated opening of Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine, also built by Turner Construction, which has since attracted a loyal guest following with its extensive recreational offerings, including indoor and outdoor waterparks, and a full-service spa.

The expansion added 202 guest suites and a 27,000-square-foot conference center to the resort, making it the largest Great Wolf Lodge in the United States, with 606 guest suites. The new conference center, also a northwoods theme, was specifically designed with the needs of the Dallas/Fort Worth region’s business and social community in mind. The center features a separate entry, convenient parking near the entrance and a private registration counter.

The eight-story indoor waterpark resort now has a total of 686,000 square feet on 45-acres, including a five-story atrium, a 98,000-square-foot indoor water park, surface parking for 1,000-cars, and meeting space for groups up to 750 people, including a 27,000-square-foot conference center, a 7,500-square-foot Grand Ballroom, six breakout and meeting rooms, two board rooms, 4,000+ square feet of pre-function space, plus six outdoor event areas.

The entire project – both phase I and phase II (the expansion) – took Turner only 28 months to build, with a total of 1,262,084 man-hours spent without one lost time incident. Phase I was a design/assist, fast-track project that managed six major design bulletins and maintained a high level of quality and budget, and was completed early in time for the 2007 Holiday season. It cost $93 million in construction volume and was completed in only 16 months. Phase II cost $35 million in construction volume and was completed in less than 12 months, all while the existing resort was open and fully-operational 24-hours a day.

“The new conference center, combined with our existing meeting space, makes Great Wolf Lodge an ideal venue for hosting group gatherings, whether it’s an executive retreat for 10 or an upscale reception for 750,” said Jack Bateman, general manager of Great Wolf Lodge in Grapevine. “At Great Wolf Lodge, we are committed to delivering creativity, excellence and innovation throughout the event planning process. In fact, we aim to enhance every group gathering with a foundation of focus, food and fun.”

The resort, located at 100 Great Wolf Drive in Grapevine (across from the Gaylord Texan Resort), has 605 family suites that sleep six to eight people, and a 98,000-square-foot indoor entertainment area. The highlight of the entertainment area is the resort’s signature year-round indoor waterpark highlighted by a 12-level tree house water fort, which provides an interactive water experience for the entire family that features more than 60 water effects, including spray guns, fountains, valves and hoses, has cargo netting and suspension bridges, and is capped by an oversized bucket that dumps nearly 1,000 gallons of water every few minutes. The indoor waterpark also features 5 high-speed body slides and inner tube waterslides that wind in and out of the building into a splash-down pool, a lazy river and seven pools, including an indoor/outdoor whirlpool.

Each of the resort’s Texas-sized family suites includes a wet bar, microwave oven, refrigerator and dining and sitting area, and complimentary wireless high-speed Internet access. Room rates include use of the waterpark by four to six guests, depending on the type of room.

The resort also houses a variety of themed restaurants, including Camp Critter Bar & Grille TM, which features a two-story realistic tree with a canopy of leaves and canvas-topped booths with hanging lanterns, giving guests the impression that they are dining in a northwoods forest camp. This was the first time Turner has hosted its Turner School of Construction Management in San Antonio. The graduation took place at The University of Texas at San Antonio’s downtown campus on April 14, and guest speakers included Congressman Ciro Rodriguez and Richard Perez, president and CEO of The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.

Since 1969, the Turner School of Construction Management has provided women- and minority-owned business enterprises (M/WBEs) and other small-business owners with formal training to develop the skills necessary to be competitive in the marketplace and potentially work with Turner — or Turner’s competitors. The school offers training in business plan development, financial planning, estimating, construction law, bonding and insurance.

Turner has held these training programs in more than 50 cities, graduating more than 21,000 entrepreneurs, and awarding 45,000 contracts, totaling $16 billion, to M/WBEs. In 2007 alone, 25 such training programs were held, graduating more than 1,000 people. In 2007, Turner awarded 4,000 contracts, worth more than $1.3 billion, to M/WBEs. Nearly $29 million worth of those contracts came out of Turner’s Texas division, which consists of Turner’s Dallas, Houston and San Antonio offices.

Turner is the leading general builder in the United States, ranking first or second in the major segments of the building construction field.
Turner has also established a new greenhouse gas emission reduction goal through EPA Climate Leaders Program - the first in its industry

Turner has also established a new greenhouse gas emission reduction goal through EPA Climate Leaders Program – the first in its industry

DALLAS, November 20, 2008 – Engineering News-Record has named Turner Construction Company the #1 Green Contractor in the 2008 Top Green Contractors list, which ranks United States contractors based on the number of sustainable and green projects they worked on in 2007. Turner Construction has a total of 429 LEED-accredited professionals and $1.8 billion in construction volume from 2007 projects registered with or certified by third-party rating groups under objective environmental or sustainable development standards. In Texas alone, Turner Construction employs more than 29 LEED-accredited professionals, 32 Green Advantage professionals, and provided construction services for 16 green projects in 2007.

Company-wide green initiatives that contributed to the ranking include the “LEEDing by Example” employee incentive, which encourages Turner employees to become LEED-accredited and enables the company to better fulfill its commitments to deliver on green building projects. All Turner employees who become LEED-accredited are entered into a lottery to receive the use of a new Toyota Prius hybrid as their company-provided vehicle for three years. Turner has also taken steps to green its fleet of company cars by offering more high mileage and hybrid vehicles and has established an environmental purchasing policy for all office supplies.

Turner has also made a commitment to reduce the company’s carbon emissions by five percent over the next five years. Turner, the first construction management firm to set such a goal, plans on achieving this by reducing electricity consumption in all offices and reducing fuel consumption in company-owned and leased vehicles. While reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, Turner also expects to reduce vehicle fuel costs and utility bills.

Turner established this goal through its membership in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Climate Leaders program. The Climate Leaders program is an EPA industry-government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. Partner companies commit to reducing their impact on the global environment by completing an inventory of their greenhouse gas emissions, setting aggressive reduction goals, and annually reporting their progress to EPA. Turner was the first construction management firm in the United States to join the EPA Climate Leaders in 2006 and is the first to set a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goal.

Recent Turner Construction Company “green” projects in the North Texas area include the headquarters for architecture firm Corgan Associates Inc. (certified LEED Silver); Pat Lobb Toyota (certified LEED Silver, first green auto dealership in the U.S.); the Embrey Engineering Building at Southern Methodist University (certified LEED Gold; first green academic building in Texas); the Haworth Showroom in downtown Dallas (certified LEED Gold); and Wal-Mart’s new green prototype store in McKinney, Texas (the first green Wal-Mart in the U.S.).

ABOUT TURNER CONSTRUCTION
