TURNER CONSTRUCTION BREAKS GROUND ON NEW 108,000- SQUARE-FOOT
FACILITY FOR CEDAR VALLEY COLLEGE NEAR DALLAS
LANCASTER, Texas, April 3, 2008
– Turner Construction Company held a groundbreaking ceremony today
at the construction site of the new $30 million, 108,000-square-foot
Science Building at Cedar Valley College (CVC), which is part of the
Dallas County Community College District. The new facility, located
at 3030 North Dallas Avenue in Lancaster, Texas, is slated to open
in May 2009. In addition to Turner Construction, other project team
members include HOK as the architect and Austin Commercial/Con-Real,
Inc. as the project manager.
Designed
to achieve LEED Silver certification, the building will incorporate
sustainable materials consistent with CVC’s existing architectural
style. The curved-shaped facility will be home to the college’s
Science and Veterinary Technology programs and will include both
indoor and outdoor science and health labs. Also included will be
faculty offices, storage, receiving and preparation areas to support
those programs.
The
entire building will be surrounded by an amphitheatre, covered
boardwalk and a footbridge that will overlook a perennial stream and
its aquatic plants and fish. In addition, students will have an
area where they can participate in a geology walk and dig around in
a fossil pit. The new center will also allow CVC students to have a
refreshing spot to do homework, read, entertain friends or just
relax.
Other
recent Turner Construction Company projects in North Texas include
the first new construction project in Dallas’ Historic West End
District in 10 years—the “green” headquarters for Corgan Associates
Inc.; Great Wolf Lodge, an indoor waterpark resort in Grapevine;
Wal-Mart's first experimental "green" Prototype Supercenter in
McKinney, Tex.; the nation's first LEED-certified auto dealership,
Pat Lobb Toyota, also in McKinney; and one of the first LEED-certified
academic buildings in the country, Southern Methodist University’s
Embrey Engineering Building in Dallas.
