SHW GROUP HONORED WITH THREE DESIGN AWARDS
SHW Group has been honored for its design of Oakland
Community College’s new Science Building addition
BERKLEY, Mich. – January 3, 2008 –
SHW Group’s Michigan studio (previously known as DSA Architects) has
been honored with a 2007 Recognized Value Award from DesignShare’s
Innovative School Design Awards program for their design of Oakland
Community College’s new Science Building addition. The new addition
is located on the college’s Highland Lakes Campus in Waterford,
Michigan.
The DesignShare Awards program recognizes projects that – by design
– support the learning process, anticipate change and inspire
unimagined possibilities. In addition to the 2007 DesignShare award,
the project recently received honorable mention from College
Planning & Management magazine for its innovative design, as
well as an Outstanding Building Award from
American School & University.
The 39,200-square-foot, two-story Science Building addition provides
instructional space for the College’s dental program, including a
functioning dental clinic that serves the surrounding community, as
well as new spaces for the Nursing and Physician’s Assistant
programs. Amenities include patient-care mock-ups, classrooms and
offices to facilitate interaction between students and faculty. The
addition is linked to the existing science building with a two-story
atrium, providing interconnection between new and existing
instructional spaces and enclosing existing campus pathways.
The building’s south facade is brick-clad with punch-through windows
and metal sunshade devices to reduce heat gain in summer months. The
white metal and glass-clad north facade allows light to penetrate an
east-west corridor, preserving a campus pathway and allowing
students and faculty views to the exterior from corridor areas.
